Cheap Date & Hustler

the pinking process

People ask about my pink hair all the time, so here's the secret:

There isn't one. I'm a licensed cosmetologist, which definitely helps, but I still don't have an exact formula. I start with professionally done highlights and lowlights. My stylist is amazing and deserves most of the credit. The pink part happens at home.

Bright colors love cold water. I love hot showers. Unfortunately, those two things are constantly at war with each other, so my color fades faster than it probably should.

My formula isn't exact. I don't measure anything. I just mix until it looks right. I use Danger Jones: Cheap Date and Hustler. The base is mostly Cheap Date. With a ribbon of Hustler mixed in, it becomes a bright hot pink. That goes underneath in the back and foiled around my face.

I don't take the color all the way to my roots. I start lower down and comb it upward until the line disappears. I've always loved a lived-in, rooty look.

Once that's on, I add more Cheap Date to lighten the mixture (a nice pepto pink) and work through the middle section.

Then I add even more Cheap Date and do the top section. By that point, it's more of a peachy baby pink.

Everything processes for at least 30 minutes, then I wash and style as usual. The top usually starts fading first, but I can normally get a solid week or two out of it before I feel the need to freshen it up.

Pictures coming soon. I'm currently out of Cheap Date.
