Sis- Migraine Doctor

Not sure why I was so surprised. She’s amazing.

I’ve always gotten migraines.
Even as a kid.
They’re nothing new.
Most of the time I know how to push through them, but every once in a while, one shows up that completely takes me out.

The last one hit while I was at work with Sis and Bubs. My vision was shot, my head was pounding, and I was just trying to survive until I could go home. Sis kept asking me to play. She didn’t understand why I couldn’t, and honestly, she shouldn’t. That’s not her job. I finally said, “Baby girl, I kinda feel like I might throw up, so I need to sit here for a little while.”

Without missing a beat she asked, “Do you need my bucket?” Before I could answer, she scurried away. A few seconds later she came back, proudly carrying the little sand bucket she takes in the car… just in case. It was such a kid solution.

Then she climbed up beside me and switched into caretaker mode. She rubbed my head, reminded me to take deep breaths, and brought me an ice pack. I have no idea where she learned to do those things, but she did them with so much confidence and kindness.

I spend a lot of time correcting her. Teaching her. Holding boundaries. She’s four, which means she argues with confidence, negotiates like a lawyer, and occasionally acts like the world’s tiniest supervillain. But then something like this happens. You get this little glimpse of the person they’re becoming, and it reminds you they’re absorbing so much more than you realize.

Kids can be absolute terrorists. Then they’ll hand you their emergency puke bucket with complete sincerity and spend the next ten minutes trying to make you feel better. Moments like that make every hard day worth it.
